2014 All-Star Game: Lineups And Starting Pitchers Named

[new_royalslider id=”10″] Clayton Kershaw’s desire to start in the All-Star Game will have to wait at least one more season. During Monday’s press conference to reveal the lineups and starting pitchers, St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny named Adam Wainwright the National League’s starter.

For Wainwright, it’s his fourth trip to the All-Star Game and first start. Kershaw was passed over for the second time, with the first coming when Bruce Bochy selected Matt Harvey, the hometown pitcher, for last season’s All-Star Game at Citi Field.

Kershaw is 8-0 in his last eight starts with a 0.74 ERA, which includes a no-hitter. Overall, Kershaw is 11-2 with a 1.78 ERA this season. By comparison, Wainwright is 12-4 with a 1.83 ERA in 19 starts.

Of his decision to go with Wainwright, Matheny said choosing the Cardinals right-hander wasn’t an easy task, via Bill Shaikin of the LA Times:

When asked about Wainwright getting the start, Kershaw said he earned the honor, via Shaikin:

While Matheny went with his own pitcher, Boston Red Sox manager selected Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez to start for the American League. With Matheny’s decision, Yasiel Puig is the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lone starter in the All-Star Game.

Puig will assume his natural position in right field and bat second in the order. Before Puig suits up for the All-Star Game, he’ll try his hand in the Home Run Derby Monday.

  1. Based on what Matt Kemp did two years in the contest and what Yasiel Puig did this year, no other Dodger should ever be picked to be in the Home Run Derby contest. Jeez. Embarrassing.
