2015 MLB All-Star Game: AL And NL Complete Rosters Announced

Whereas last year the Los Angeles Dodgers sent Yasiel Puig to the 2014 All-Star Game behind fan voting, they didn’t have similar success for the 2015 Midsummer Classic, which is set for July 14 at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

However, as was the case last year, the Dodgers’ presence is felt by way of pitchers and reserves named to the National League team, which were announced Monday afternoon. Named to the team are Adrian Gonzalez (fifth selection), Yasmani Grandal (first selection), Zack Greinke (third selection) and Joc Pederson (first selection).

Clayton Kershaw was not named to the team, though he’s one of five NL players up for the final spot via the final vote. The group includes Johnny Cueto (Reds), Jeurys Familia (Mets), Carlos Martinez (Cardinals) and Troy Tulowitzki (Rockies). Justin Turner was also left off the NL roster.

Pederson is the Dodgers’ sixth rookie named the NL All-Star team and first since Hideo Nomo in 1995. Grandal is the first Dodgers catcher since Russell Martin in 2008, and Gonzalez becomes the club first All-Star first baseman since Nomar Garciaparra in 2006.

Last year the AL team jumped on St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright early to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning at Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins. The NL responded with two runs in the second inning and another in the fourth, but lost 5-3 to give the eventual AL Champion home field advantage in the World Series.

The win was the AL’s second consecutive after the NL won three straight. The NL holds the advantage in the all-time record with a 43-39-2 mark. Managers Bruce Bochy of the San Francisco Giants and Ned Yost of the Kansas City Royals will select the starting pitcher for their respective team.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny created somewhat of a firestorm last year when he elected to go with Wainwright ahead of Kershaw. While there isn’t a pitcher who is dominating to the same extent Kershaw did in the first half of the 2014 season, Greinke’s performance has certainly made him a viable candidate.

  1. So Yasmani Grandal is an All-Star, batting .271 with 12 homers and .881 OPS.

Meanwhile, Matt Kemp is batting .241 with 6 homers and .642 OPS. And now the Padres are contemplating blowing up their roster…

Can we all finally put to rest that this was a great trade for us?

      1. In the last line I wrote that it was a great trade for us. So let’s put this whole argument to rest. Maybe I didn’t word it perfectly, but you know what I mean. 😛

      2. No, the comment was directed at all the people who called the front office stupid and predicted doom and gloom for the Dodgers after getting rid of kemp. There were only a handful on here, Alex and I being probably the most vocal, who could see the sense it made and have the patience to wait and see instead of getting the fire warmed up and stakes ready for Friedman. Looks like it has played out very well for us.

  2. You beat me to it!

Where are the Grandal haters? He’s been a huge asset to our team. He’s quickly becoming a very solid defensive catcher also…I have to wonder how much his pitch framing has affected the incredible era of this team.
