A Certain Prince Could Help Frank Make More Money

Written by on December 9, 2011 in Editorials - No comments

December 7, 1941 will forever go down as the day that the Pearl Harbor was attacked.

December 8, 2011 will forever go down as the day that the Anaheim Angels signed Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson. Right?

Wrong.

While that glory lasted six hours, or so, something bigger happened. The Los Angeles Lakers had traded for Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets, a superstar in the NBA. This trade would presumably (and may still) set the tables for the Lakers to acquire Dwight Howard, arguably the league’s best center; from the Orlando Magic.

But within a few hours, the big news became even bigger. The league announced that the trade would be vetoed by the commissioner of the NBA, David Stern.

You might wonder why a basketball story, followed by an Angel story would be on a Dodgers’ blog.

Here is why.

Commissioner Stern stated “basketball reasons” for vetoing the blockbuster trade.

But what exactly are basketball reasons?

Deciphering what has happened, it is evident that the Hornets would take a tremendous hit with the loss of Chris Paul.

It was at that point that it hit me that this situation is exactly what the Dodgers are going through, except quite the opposite.

The Dodgers have two tremendous leaders in Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemp, but they will not be enough to get fans talking about the team again, much like what we have already seen with the Angels yesterday with their signing of Albert Pujols.

It has been repeatedly said that the team is not pursuing big-contract players because they are unable to do so.

But, Frank, are you not looking to maximize the value of your team? Did you not just win the right to accelerate the sale of the TV rights so that you could make more money?

How about an opportunity to earn more money?

Listening?

Okay.

Here is how.

Sign Prince Fielder.

If McCourt were to seek the approval of Major League Baseball to spend the necessary funds to bring Fielder to Los Angeles; the Dodgers instantly become a more attractive purchase.

Might it scare some bidders away? Definitely. But, as fans, we want that to happen. The team needs a serious owner to help awaken the sleeping giant that has not basked in the glory of the World Series in what will be 24 years; and perhaps beyond that with the way things have been going.

Prince would give Matt Kemp protection; but everybody already knows that.

Prince would instill fear into opposing ballclubs.

Most importantly though (or at least in the eyes of Frank), Prince boosts the value of the Dodger franchise.

More money, Frank. If that is what you want, that is what you will get.

But you have to work for it; kind of like a property for sale in the real estate market. The better off you remodel the house, the higher the revenue suddenly becomes.

The Dodgers are a pretty attractive property; but could become a mansion-like property with the acquisition of a big-name star like Prince Fielder.

The NBA is trying to maintain the value of the Hornets; so why would MLB hold you back?

So why not make one of the next coming days famous for the Dodgers signing a certain Prince that will boost the name and value of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
