Animated: Dodgers Execute Perfect Relay To Get Allen Craig At Home

The Dodgers have been mocked for their poor defensive plays all season long and it was on display early in the first inning today against the Cardinals.

Yasiel Puig made an error and Nick Punto made a poor throw at home as the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead. After a two-run fourth inning, the Dodgers took a 2-1 lead as they look to extend their road winning streak to 15.

In the bottom of the fifth, starter Zack Greinke allowed a one-out single to Allen Craig, but then got Matt Holliday to pop out to first. Third baseman Allen Craig hit a liner into the gap in right center and Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo waved home Craig.

Puig made a strong throw to the infield that Punto fielded and threw a one hop throw to catch A.J. Ellis who applied the tag on Craig to keep the Dodgers in the lead.

Despite all their defensive misfortunes for the better part of the season, the Dodgers have been much better in that department as they’ve ascended to the top of the NL West.

Here’s the incredible relay from Puig to Punto and to Ellis:

Awesome turnaround! What a great play.

I screamed so loud my neighbor came out on his patio to ask what just happened. *He’s a Cards fan and just walked in from work.
