MLB and Dodgers News: Baseball Mourns Losses of Yordano Ventura, Andy Marte

For the second time in five months, a young MLB pitcher lost his life too soon. A former longtime major leaguer was also tragically lost.

Yordano Ventura, a flamethrower for the Kansas City Royals, died in an automobile accident this weekend. Ventura was 25 years old. In game 6 of the 2014 World Series, Ventura pitched a gem: Seven shutout innings and just three hits to help the Royals force a game seven against San Francisco. The performance was dedicated to his lost friend and St. Louis Cardinal Oscar Taveras, who was just lost in an automobile accident. Ventura won a ring with Kansas City the following season.

Andy Marte died in a car accident Jan. 22 at age 33. Marte was a versatile infielder who carved out a decade-long career in baseball. After debuting with the Atlanta Braves in 2005, Marte played with Cleveland from 2006-10. He bounced around in the minor leagues and Atlantic League of Professional Baseball before playing for the Diamondbacks in 2014.

Baseball reacted to the losses of two members of its family.
