Dee Gordon Believes Getting Traded By Dodgers Was ‘Better’ For Him

Talented as the Los Angeles Dodgers were in 2014, good enough to win 94 games and repeat as National League West division champions, they again fell short in the postseason. An offseason of change followed as the front office and roster were both overhauled.

The first major shakeup in terms of player personnel came when the Dodgers and Miami Marlins agreed on a seven-player trade that sent Dee Gordon, Dan Haren and Miguel Rojas to South Beach. In exchange the Dodgers received Austin Barnes, Chris Hatcher, Andrew Heaney and Kiké Hernandez.

In trading Gordon the Dodgers lost their leadoff man and the 2014 stolen base leader. It’s believed Gordon’s downward trend in the second half of last season played a role in the club essentially deciding to sell high on the All-Star second baseman.

With the Dodgers having just completed a three-game series at Marlins Park, Gordon’s struggles down the stretch of last season were again brought to the forefront. He believes some of it was tied the amount of baseball played and his diminutive stature, according to Bill Plunkett of the OC Register:

They asked me to play winter ball two times and then they asked me to play every day (after he won the second-base job),” said the whippet-thin Gordon, listed at 170 pounds. “You’re asking me to play over 200 games and you want me to be the strongest player on the team when I’m the smallest player on the team.”

The 27 year old also thanked the Dodgers, as he did during an interview on the Marlins’ first visit to Dodger Stadium this season, and added the change was beneficial for him:

I appreciate every opportunity they gave me,” he said. “I think it was better for me to go to a different situation.”

In six games against the Dodgers this season Gordon has had modest success. He’s collected seven hits in 26 plate appearances, including three doubles. Moreoever, Gordon has struck out twice, drawn one walk and has been caught stealing twice to zero stolen bases.

  1. The Dodgers should never have traded Gordon. Besides getting nothing in return they lost an All Star second baseman and catalyst for their offense. He broke down last year because he was asked to play too much. Giving him time off with Turner filling in would have kept him fresh and productive all season.

    1. Broke down? How did he break down? .289 is breaking down? Wow.
If .289 is breaking down, then almost all of the Dodgers team needs to be traded. His single and walks were routinely getting him to second and third. He distracted all the pitchers. Please remind me to not hire the Dodger FO if I ever need someone to run my business. Amazing.

  2. It was a business move. We should be in the getting done in playoffs mode. He wasn’t that Miss his stolen bases though. But we need more at the leadoff when it counts in Sept. Not just April n May.

  3. Who gives a two shit. He is expendable and The Los Angeles DODGERS are better off without him.

  4. Whoever in the Dodger front office that decided to trade Gordon should be immediately fired. No questions asked. In fact, the employees that are fired should not even have due process rights because that decision to trade him was stupid then as now.

  5. Horrible trade. Gordon leads the league in stolen bases, hits, batting average. Even I knew he played too many games last couple of years and it was the reason why he slowed down.

Dodgers phucked up. BTW Dee has a .994 fielding percentage. I don’t care what anyone’s twisted logic is/was about his numbers, his replacement is older and obviously not the triple threat that Gordon is. What a tank job.

Pisses me off everytime he comes to the plate. Eff you Dodgers management. And thanks for doing absolutely nothing about getting the team back on television.

At least I can enjoy some Royals games, and their uniforms are simular…… I lie to myself like the Dodgers lie to me, just so I can enjoy some baseball.
