More Top Picks

Along with Holmes and Brigham, third rounder John Richy made eight appearances with the Raptors and was up and down. The 21-year-old righty posted strong peripherals but also had a 5.71 ERA before moving up to Great Lakes.

Richy doesn’t have the upside of his fellow draftees, but he throws strikes with a good, sinking fastball and a reliable breaking ball.

Last year’s fourth-round pick Cody Bellinger suffered a shoulder injury early in the summer and came back with a vengeance. The 18-year-old batted .328/.368/.503 in 46 games with 13 doubles, six triples and three home runs. He also stole eight bases without being caught. Power usually takes a while to develop, and the lanky Bellinger has plenty of room to add strength.

Another top 2014 pick came up to help the Raptors with their playoff run in Alex Verdugo. The outfielder played just five regular season games, but collected eight hits and showed off his arm in the outfield. He could start next season with Great Lakes.

Others of Note

With their 11th round pick in last June’s draft, the Dodgers took Stanford closer AJ Vanegas. Projected as a top pick out of high school, the big righty has settled into a relief role through college and into the pros. He throws hard with a good slider and simply needs to keep the ball in the strike zone to be effective.

Watching Billy Flamion pitch immediately brought J.P. Howell to mind. Flamion has the same type of unique delivery and big breaking ball that the Dodgers’ go-to lefty features. Flamion, like Vanegas, needs to throw more strikes but is effective against both lefties and righties.

Devan Ahart, the 16th round pick, was a spark plug at the top of Ogden’s batting order, hitting .358/.399/.489 in 48 games before a late season promotion to Great Lakes, where he batted .304. The 21-year-old center fielder shows classic top of the order skills, with his ability to make contact and speed on the bases.
