Dodgers 2014 Player Reviews: Jamey Wright

After a year with the Tampa Bay Rays, veteran Jamey Wright rejoined the Los Angeles for the 2014 season. The first time he became a Dodger in 2012 on a minor league deal, but was signed to a major league contract in his return.

Wright began his career 18 years ago as starter but has seen bullpen work in his later years. Upon joining the Dodgers the second time around, Wright figured to serve as a long reliever in a bullpen that brought back Brian Wilson and added Chris Perez.

For the most part, Wright struggled in 2014, but did manage to make 61 appearances including a late-season start in 2014. On the year, Wright pitched his way a 5-4 record with one save while maintaining a 4.35 ERA and 1.408 WHIP.

Wright was on the NLDS roster, but didn’t see anytime in any of the series’ four games.

2014 Highlight

On the back end of a May 1 road doubleheader, Wright picked up a win against the Minnesota Twins. He came into the game to start the ninth inning with the score tied 2-2.

After issuing a one-out walk to Sam Fuld, Wright retired the next two batters keeping the winning run on the bases and sending the game into extra innings.

Wright stayed on the mound for the 10th and 11th innings and only allowed a single hit. The Dodgers hit two solo home runs in the 12th to give the Dodgers a 4-2 lead while Kenley Jansen saved the game to give Wright the win.

2015 Outlook

Wright enters the offseason as a free agent as he only signed a one-year deal. The 39-year-old earned $1.8 million this past season. It’s unlikely the Dodgers bring him back near that price considering his age and struggles.

Despite the team’s struggles, the team will likely look elsewhere to fix the bullpen problems.
