Josh Beckett took the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight, but it was San Francisco Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong stole the show as he retired ten straight batters through nearly four innings. The right-hander gave up his first hit of the game to Yasiel Puig, but Vogelsong then seamlessly worked his way through the bottom of the fourth.

Meanwhile, Beckett also allowed no runs going through the fourth inning, while allowing three walks and three hits. The Dodgers finally put runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Vogelsong gave up a leadoff single to Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford followed with a walk. Juan Uribe flied out to right that advanced Kemp to third. With one out and runners on first and third, Drew Butera hit a sacrifice fly to drive Kemp home and the Dodgers took a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth, Beckett retired the batters in order to log yet another scoreless inning. Dee Gordon hit a leadoff single and proceeded to steal second as Puig walked with no outs, but the runners were left on first and second. Brandon Hicks scored the Giants’ first run of the game, hitting a solo homer off Beckett, and after giving up a double to Angel Pagan, Chris Withrow game in to relieve Beckett to close the inning. Vogelsong remained in the game in the seventh and allowed just one hit to Crawford before getting Uribe to ground out into a double play.

In the eighth, Withrow issued a walk to Buster Posey to start of the inning but managed to strikeout Michael Morse and Brandon Belt. Butera recorded the final out by throwing Posey out in his attempt to steal second. Vogelsong labored in the eighth inning, and after giving up a single to Chone Figgins, was replaced by Jeremy Affeldt to face Gordon. After Affeldt got the second baseman to groundout, Santiago Casilla was brought in to face Puig and he struck him out to end the inning.

Kenley Jansen came in the game at the top of the ninth and threw a quick 1-2-3 inning, as Casilla stayed in the game for the bottom of the ninth and matched Jansen’s work. J.P. Howell took the mound as the teams headed into extra innings. After recording one out and walking Angel Pagan, Jamey Wright was summoned out of the bullpen to close the inning, however Wright issued another walk to Hunter Pence. With just one out, Wright then walked Posey to load the bases. Hector Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly to drive Pagan home to give the Giants a 2-1 lead. Brandon Belt followed with an RBI single that scored Posey and the Giants extended their lead to 3-1.

Sergio Romo took the mound for Casilla and hit Andre Ethier after getting Crawford to fly out. Scott Van Slyke came in to pinch hit for Butera and grounded out for the second out. Figgins hit into the final out of the inning and the Giants defeated the Dodgers 3-1.
