Dodgers Highlight Of The Week: Butera And Ramirez In Sync

Hanley Ramirez’s 2014 season has far from gone as expected. Although Ramirez was coming off a hairline fracture in his ribs suffered in the first game of the 2013 National League Championship Series, expectations were high for the shortstop.

He did after all help spark the team’s historic run and was arguably the best hitter in the game for much of that stretch. This season, Ramirez has been unable to remain healthy, and his offense and defense have struggled.

Ramirez’s latest injury, an oblique strain, required him to be placed on the 15-day disabled list for the first time this season. It may have somewhat been a blessing in disguise as Ramirez returned and said he was playing pain-free.

Although his first game back was a bit of a struggle, Ramirez has looked improved defensively since returning. He made a glove toss to Dee Gordon for a force out at second base in Tuesday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks and followed it the next night with a diving stop.

On Saturday, Ramirez added to his defensive upswing. Cameron Maybin represented the go-ahead run at second base in the eighth inning. With Jamey Wright on the mound and Alexi Amarista at the plate, Ramirez signaled to Drew Butera and relayed his intentions to break for second after the pitch.

Butera’s throw to second base skipped under Maybin’s arm, which forced Ramriez to backhand it as he sat on the ground and he successfully applied the tag. However, similar to Justin Turner’s defensive effort, it was to no avail as the San Diego Padres won on a walk-off.
