Dodgers Highlight Of The Week: Van Slyke Ends Game With Double Play

Playing in the final game before returning home from a six-game road trip, the Los Angeles Dodgers were clinging to a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning.

However, rather than having Kenley Jansen on the mound to close out the game, the Dodgers handed the ball to Brian Wilson. Jansen had pitched in four of the previous five games and was given the night off. Wilson struck out the first batter he faced, then allowed a single to Danny Valencia.

Pedro Ciracio pinch-ran for Valencia and stole second base. Lorenzo Cain battled Wilson to a full count and then lined a shot towards Scott Van Slyke, who was playing first base.

Van Slyke made a leaping, “snow-cone” catch and quickly got the ball to Miguel Rojas, who stepped on second to complete the game-ending double play.

The win gave the Dodgers a 4-2 record on the road trip and propelled them into their series with the St. Louis Cardinals, whom they took three of four from and have moved into a tie for first place in the NL West.
