Dodgers Injury Update: Hyun-Jin Ryu Has Yet To Resume Throwing

[new_royalslider id=”14″] The notion of finally having a completely healhty pitching rotation was put on hold despite Clayton Kershaw’s return. Days before the Dodgers would reinstate their ace from the disabled list, they announced Hyun-Jin Ryu was placed on the DL due to shoulder inflammation.

The move was retroactive to April 28 and neither Ryu, nor the Dodgers seemed overly concerned. The left-hander stated it’s a similar injury he suffered in 2011, which he was able to recover from after resting for 10 days. The level of concern was then raised when Ryu returned to Los Angeles to meet with Dr. Neal ElAttrache. However, the examination of Ryu’s shoulder resulted in positive news as ElAttrache determined the left-hander wouldn’t require an MRI.

Following the exam, the plan was for Ryu to go through a throwing program as part of his recovery. Ryu has yet to resume throwing however, and Ken Gurnick of Dodgers.com reports he may not be immediately reinstated from the DL when he’s eligible:

Ryu is eligible to be activated on Tuesday, although that seems unlikely. The club has not announced it’s probable starters for next week’s series with the Marlins, but did decide to keep Zack Greinke on a five-day cycle even though his Monday start in Washington was cut short after three innings by rain.

Kershaw returning helps offset the loss of Ryu and it also means Paul Maholm will remain in the rotation for the foreseeable future. Ryu has a 3-2 record with a 3.00 ERA through seven starts this season. His last start before being placed on the DL was a five-inning effort against the Colorado Rockies in which he allowed six runs and suffered a loss.

While the Dodgers have yet to provide any indication Ryu’s status may be more serious than initially believed, his recovery is slowly beginning to look similar to that of Kershaw’s. As was the case with Kershaw, should Ryu need more time to recover, the Dodgers will certainly allow it and not rush him back.
