Dodgers Injury Update: Ryu Returns To Los Angeles For Shoulder Exam

[new_royalslider id=”14″] The Los Angeles Dodgers may be headed down a familiar, but unpleasant path with another one of their pitchers. On Friday, Hyun-Jin Ryu was placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his shoulder. Neither Ryu, nor the Dodgers seemed overly concerned, and Ryu compared it to a similar injury he suffered in 2011, which he fully recovered from after 10 days of rest.

However,Bill Plunkett of the OC Register reports Ryu was sent Sunday home ahead of his Dodger teammates to meet with Dr. Neal ElAttrache:

According to Plunkett, Ryu hasn’t had an MRI on his left shoulder, but that will change if ElAttrache deems it necessary:

The latest developments has taken Ryu’s situation and closely mirrored it to that of Clayton Kershaw. The Dodgers’ ace was at first simply scratched from his scheduled start due to inflammation in his upper back. It was also not believed to be a serious situation, but it of course would later lead to Kershaw being placed on the DL and missing over one month of action, with some concern the injury could linger into June.

Prior to being placed on the DL, Ryu completed seven starts this season, posting a 3-2 record with a 3.00 ERA. With Kershaw set to return on Tuesday, the Dodgers were days away from having their pitching rotation at full-strength for the first time this season.

Ryu’s stint on the DL likely means at least two more starts for Paul Maholm, who has been inconsistent this season but has put together back-to-back productive starts.
