Dodgers’ Minor League End Of Season Evaluations: Jose Dominguez

SEASON IN REVIEW

Jose Dominguez signed with the Dodgers as a free agent out of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic in July 2007. Dominguez began and spent most of this year in Double-A with the Chattanooga Lookouts. After success with the Lookouts, he spent some time with Triple-A Albuquerque and eventually got called up to the big league squad in late June.

In his time with the Lookouts, Dominguez had a lot of success. He appeared in 14 games and finished with a record of 1-0. All of his appearances came in relief as he collected five saves and finished with an ERA of 2.60. He pitched in 17.1 innings, collecting 28 strikeouts while allowing opponents to hit just .138.

After his success in Double-A, the Dodgers moved him up to Triple-A. Dominguez spent a short time in Triple-A, but again experienced a lot of success. In eight games, Dominguez finished with a record of 1-0 and an ERA of 0.00. In eight innings pitched, he struck out 12 batters and had a KK/9 of 13.5.

Dominguez finally made it up to the big leagues after cruising through the Dodgers minor league system. During his time with the Dodgers, he pitched in 8.1 innings, finishing his stay with the Dodgers with an ERA of 2.16. He collected only 4 strikeouts in his nine appearances, but saw his season end with a quad injury in late July.

FUTURE GOING FORWARD

If you watched Dominguez pitch in his short time with the Dodgers, you saw that he possesses an electric arm, sometimes touching 100 mph with his fastball. I would think given that Dominguez did have some success at the major league level and the fact that he has stuff that translates to the big league level, he’ll start Spring Training with the Dodgers.

If Dominguez shows that he does belong in the big leagues, I don’t see why he wouldn’t get a chance to be a big part of an uncertain back end of the Dodger bullpen.

I don’t think trading Dominguez will be and should be part of any trade talks this off-season as he’s a young power arm that should be valued within the organization. If the Dodgers play this right, he could end up being the set-up man of the future or possibly the closer with his velocity coming out of the bullpen.

Whatever the case may be, his talent should allow him to be a big part of the Dodgers plans moving forward.
