Dodgers’ Minor League End Of Season Evaluations: Pitcher Zach Lee

NAME:  Zach Lee

POSITION: Pitcher

HEIGHT: 6-3

WEIGHT: 190 LBS

SEASON IN REVIEW

After what was an up and down season for Lee, he ended up as the number three overall prospect in the Dodgers’ organization. Lee spent this season in Double-A Chattanooga alongside highly touted outfield prospect Joc Pederson. Lee entered the season as the projected number one starter for the Lookouts and maintained that status for most of the season.

In 25 starts, he finished with a record of 10 wins and 10 losses and an ERA of 3.22. He had 131 strikeouts in 142.2 innings pitched and notched his first career complete game in July. He held opponents to just a .247 batting average and had a 1.17 WHIP, so the 10-10 record isn’t reflective of how well he pitched this season.

Lee was also rumored to be in some trade deadline deals along with teammate Joc Pederson. Just like Pederson, the Dodgers elected to hold onto Lee given the uncertainty in the back end of the current rotation and the possibility of him making the big league rotation in 2014.

Along with Scott Schebler, Lee was honored with the Branch Rickey award, which is given to the top minor league pitcher and player in the Dodger organization.

FUTURE GOING FORWARD

Lee will continue to be the top pitching prospect in the organization with the likelyhood of Stephen Fife getting a realistic chance at being on the big league roster next season. Lee will most likely be getting an invite to big league camp in Spring Training and could be moving up to Triple-A next season. However, with just three starting pitchers signed next season who aren’t injured, Lee could conceivably pitch his way into the rotation in the spring.

The Dodgers have a dominant duo of pitchers with Clayton Kershaw and Zach Greinke headlining the top of the rotation and Hyun-Jin Ryu is the third starter after a breakout rookie season. It’ll be interesting to see how aggressive the Dodgers will be in the pitching free agent market as Lee could be a cheaper, younger alternative.
