Player of the Day – Alex Verdugo

Sure, it wasn’t the greatest stat line, but it brings up a fascinating stat. This year’s second-rounder, Alex Verdugo, has played in 15 professional games. He hit his second home run yesterday. In that same span, he only has struck out twice.

The Tuscon native may be benefiting from playing so close to home, but his eight-to-two walk to strikeout ratio is undeniably impressive. Verdugo also has six doubles and a pair of stolen bases. The 18-year-old center fielder was thought of as a pitcher coming out of high school, but it appears the Dodgers saw something other clubs didn’t in his bat.
