Hitter of the Week – Jared Walker

Last year’s fifth-rounder struggled in his first time through the Arizona League, batting .231 during his debut. This year, Walker has gotten off to a much better start, batting .385 through his first eight games, while spending time at second and third base.

On Tuesday, Walker had the best game of his young career, going 5-for-5 and hitting for the cycle. He ended the week batting .391/.440/.783 with a pair of home runs and he even stole three bases. Hopefully Walker can ride this momentum out of rookie ball.

Pitcher of the Week – Grant Holmes

After a rough month of April, Holmes has settled in with the Great Lakes Loons and seems to be putting together a strong first full season. Despite the slow start, he was named to the Midwest League All-Star team, facing two batters in the game on Tuesday. He struck out the first and gave up a humpback liner to short to the second before being removed.

On Sunday, Holmes returned to his normal routine and dominated, surrendering just one hit over six innings. His rhythm has improved over the course of the season and he looks like he’s lost a little weight.

Holmes’ fastball still sits in the low to mid 90s and he shows the hard breaking ball in every start. What’s more, he’s throwing his changeup with confidence against lefties. Another strong month or two may result in a late season promotion.
