Dodgers Minor League Spotlight: Chase De Jong

Just behind Zach Lee on the Dodgers top prospects list is right hander Chase De Jong. Now the Dodgers’ 20th best prospect, De Jong was acquired from the Blue Jays last July when the Dodgers sent over $1 Million in international signing money.

Out of Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, Calfornia, Chase was not only an exceptional pitcher, he was a more than capable offensive force as he batted .400 in high school.

Once committed to USC on a scholarship, the Blue Jays took a risk in the second round of the 2012 draft by selecting him. It was clear to De Jong that Toronto was ready to give him first-round money in order to pry him away from the Trojans. Once he was signed, he immediately became the club’s 17th best prospect.

De Jong had one of his best MiLB performances for the Quakes last year.

Earlier in 2012, Chase received a 10 out of 10 on the Perfect Game National grading scale. In his PG profile, it states that Chase has a “very high ceiling” and was “outstanding at many PG events.”

Now that he is playing for his home team, the Dodgers have given him a non-roster invite to Spring Training in 2016. Chase offers a low-90s fastball and throws a well established curveball as well. He is also working on a changeup that is still in progress, but the addition of a third pitch could make him a great long reliever/spot starter.

Going into Spring Training, he will bring with him four seasons of minor league experience, including one season in high-A pitching for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. Last season, he finished the year with an ERA of 3.43 and a WHIP of 1.115. He finished the year with a record of 11-7 and should fit into the Dodgers’ plan for the future going forward.

  1. Chase De Jong is the epitome of in between pitching prospects.  He is not yet with Urias or De Leon, but is ahead of Holmes, Buehler, and Alveraz.  This will be a critical year for him, probably at AA.  He is still young, and if he is successful at AA he will move up the list.  Urias and De Leon will probably be in the rotation in 2017, and De Jong could be considered a viable rotation candidate in 2018.
