Dodgers Nearing Deal for Aaron Harang

Written by on December 5, 2011 in Editorials - No comments

ESPN Insider’s Jim Bowden tweets that the Dodgers are nearing an agreement with free agent pitcher Aaron Harang, ending a battle with the Colorado Rockies over the right-hander.

Harang is likely to be pegged as the team’s fifth-starter in the rotation behind Clayton Kershaw, Chad Billingsley, Ted Lilly, and the newly-signed Chris Capuano.

The terms have not yet been released, but assuming that the Dodgers’ budget for pitching was set at $10 million prior to the offseason, and coupling that with Chris Capuano’s $3 million deal that is back-loaded towards 2013, one would have to estimate that Harang could be had for two years and $9 million.

Harang made $3.5 million with the San Diego Padres last season, where he went 14-7 with a 3.64 ERA in 28 starts.

Harang played just one year with the Padres; after spending eight years with the Cincinnati Reds.

Harang, 34 in May, is a San Diego native, who played all the way until college at home; representing the San Diego State Aztecs.

Harang’s career record at Dodger Stadium stands at 1-2. He posts an ERA of 3.65.

Harang has come a long way from his All-Star season in 2007, when he went 16-6 with a 3.73, but with a K/BB ratio of 4.19. Last year’s numbers while with the Padres were encouraging.

Harang would see much of the same benefits from playing at Dodger Stadium as he did at Petco Park. He will also be aided by what would be a better team on paper.
