Dodgers News: A.J. Ellis To Undergo Surgery On Meniscus In Left Knee

[new_royalslider id=”9″] Roughly two weeks into their regular season, the Los Angeles Dodgers have dealt with a rash of injuries to multiple pitchers. Zack Greinke was the first to go down in Spring Training with a calf strain and he was followed by Josh Beckett, Clayton Kershaw and Brian Wilson.

While the injuries seemed to primarily be affecting pitchers, the Dodgers announced Monday evening via their Twitter account that starting catcher A.J. Ellis is set to undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus on Tuesday:

A timetable for Ellis’ return has yet to be set and the Dodgers announced more information would be provided on Wednesday, along with a roster move before their 7:10 PM PT start against the Detroit Tigers:

Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports Ellis is expected to miss 4-6 weeks:

Ellis played 133 and 115 games in 2012 and 2013, typically missing action due to routine days off. Last season, Ellis was placed on the disabled list as he recovered from an oblique strain. The brief stint on the DL was a first for Ellis since the 2003 season. Not necessarily the most productive catcher with the bat, Ellis’ is a valued leader of the pitching staff and is an effective catcher behind the plate and in throwing out base runners.

The Dodgers didn’t announce when the injury occurred, though Ellis did miss Sunday’s game, albeit under the impression it was nothing more than a day off for the 32-year-old catcher. With Ellis set to be sidelined, Drew Butera, whom the Dodgers acquired in July of 2013 will likely take over behind the plate.
