The Los Angeles Dodgers were expecting a lot from Alex Guerrero, the Cuban second baseman who was signed to a four-year, $28 million deal. The Dodgers then received a bit of surprising news two months ago when an altercation occurred between Albuquerque Isotopes teammates Miguel Olivo and Guerrero.

Olivo reportedly bit Guerrero in the ear as tensions quickly rose following a dispute over Guerrero’s applying of rising between the two. The Dodgers completed an investigation of the incident that resulted in Olivo being released from the organization.

Guerrero required plastic surgery to have his ear reattached and has been unable to participate in any physical activity where he may break a sweat.

There was also some concern as to whether or not the surgery would take, but Scott Boras, Guerrero’s agent had a positive update, via Jon Heyman of CBS Sports:

The ear is going to make it. The surgery was a success, and he won’t need another surgery.”

The Dodgers have yet to release a timetable for Guerrero’s recovery, but an ESPN.com report pegged his return at five weeks from the time Guerrero underwent surgery. Along with not being able to do much physical activity, Guerrero has spent a portion of his days sitting in a hyperbaric chamber.

The purpose of the chamber is to aid with oxygen flow in an effort to increase the recovery rate. Guerrero was having a successful start to the season in Triple-A, where he was hitting .376 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs. At the time of the incident, Guerrero was in the midst of a hot streak, hitting six home runs in six games and posting a .600 batting average.

As the Dodgers were hit by a rash of injuries, there’s some thought Guerrero may have been in-line for a promotion, which went to Erisbel Arruebarrena, had he not been sidelined due to the altercation.

Nonetheless, if Guerrero is able to pick up where he left off, he’ll likely find himself with the Dodgers sooner rather than later.
