Dodgers News: Alex Wood Scratched Tonight

In today’s episode of “What Los Angeles Dodgers Player Is Hurt?”, it appears that left-hander Alex Wood is going to be scratched from the game he’s planning on pitching in tonight because of left forearm tightness.  There’s no word on whether or not this will lead to him missing substantial time, but this isn’t good.

While it can also be that this is just a precautionary measure being taken by the team to make sure that they have a fourth starter going into the season, it’s still not ideal seeing how many pitchers are on the mend or just starting to get injured now. It’s quite concerning, in fact. But the depth could help.

ICYMI: Dodgers News: Seager Left Game With Knee Pain

From Ken Gurnick, beat reporter for MLB dot com:

Alex Wood was slated to start the game in Peoria against the Seattle Mariners. Instead, it’ll be Carlos Frias taking his spot. Wood had a successful 2014 with the Atlanta Braves, but struggled mightily in 2015 even despite getting traded to the Dodgers. Part of that was injury related.

Wood finished 2015 with a 3.84 ERA in 189.2 innings. In 2014, he had a 2.78 ERA in 171.2 innings while fanning 170 batters. The Dodgers are hoping to get the 2014 Wood instead of the 2015 Wood, but they’d rather have either Wood at this point. Without Wood, they’re down another capable starter.

As of right now, there’s no word on the severity of the forearm tightness. It could just be all precautionary, as stated above, but there’s no way of knowing yet until more information is made known by the organization and coaching staff. As it stands, Wood has had Tommy John surgery before, and he is the team’s most likely candidate to have it again.

But that’s getting ahead of ourselves. For now, he’s not pitching tonight. This could all just be nothing, but it could also be something. Keep an eye on it.
