Dodgers News: Alexander Guerrero Draws Ian Kinsler Comparisons

Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero cleared his final hurdle in signing a contract with a major league team yesterday and all indications are he’ll soon sign a deal with the Dodgers.

The 26-year-old shortstop in Cuba will probably shift to second base with the Dodgers, which would probably end any speculation that they’d sign Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano in the offseason. However, not many people have seen Guerrero in action, but Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com was on ESPN 710 Radio with Mason and Ireland and discussed comparisons he’s heard:

He’s a 5’11” 205 pound middle infielder. He can also play second base and a lot of major league scouts project him to play there. He’s kind of close to an Ian Kinsler type. Power-hitting guy, adequate defense and good running skills. You can move him up and down the lineup.

In three years playing in Cuba, Guerrero hit 60 home runs in 886 at-bats, which is impressive being that the Cuban seasons are far shorter than the 162 games played in major league baseball.

The Dodgers lineup could look significantly different next season as it’s likely one of the four high priced outfielders will be traded while Juan Uribe, Mark Ellis and AJ Ellis are all impending free agents.

If Guerrero does turn out to be similar to Ian Kinsler, the Dodgers would’ve hit another home run with their international scouting as he looks to join the likes of Yasiel Puig and Hyun-Jin Ryu as another success story.
