Dodgers News And Rumors: Alex Guerrero Losing Competition At Second

[new_royalslider id=”34″]

The Los Angeles Dodgers entered Spring Training needing to solidify various portions on their roster. One of those is at second base, where manager Don Mattingly has for all intents and purposes evaluated a group of four primary candidates — Chone Figgins, Dee Gordon, Alex Guerrero and Justin Turner.

Initially, the player whom many believed would take hold of the position was Guerrero. Though a natural shortstop, the allure of another Cuban coming in and making an immediate impact, similar to what was seen with Yasiel Puig last season, was too much to overlook. So too was Guerrero’s four-year, $28 million contract. Now 14 games into the Spring Training schedule, Guerrero appears to be on the outside looking in.

Rather than play in Monday’s tie with the Oakland Athletics, the 27-year-old infielder participated in an intrasquad game. Manager Don Mattingly’s reasoning for putting Guerrero in that situation is he believes it’s the best opportunity for him to get on the field. Perhaps out of the picture to start, Guerrero could still play his way onto the team as a backup infielder.
