Dodgers News And Rumors: Dodgers Continue To Make Coaching Decisions

After a very awkward and tense press conference between Ned Colletti and Don Mattingly yesterday afternoon, the Dodgers have made some decisions regarding the coaching staff for next season.

This morning it was announced the Dodgers fired bench coach Trey Hillman and advanced scout Wade Taylor. Both were considered to be very close to Mattingly and it was speculated this could be the beginning of the end of the Mattingly era here in Los Angeles. Mattingly had brought in Hillman himself and had said he wanted his entire staff to return next season, but the Dodgers decided to go in a different direction.

It was expected to be the first of many casualties for the Dodgers coaching staff, but Ken Gurnick of Dodgers.com reported that the Dodgers have decided to keep the majority of the coaching stuff intact for next season. Rick Honeycutt, Davey Lopes and Tim Wallach have all had their options picked up by the organization and will be back in the Dodger dugout next year.

While most of the coaching staff will be back, there are still a few coaches who didn’t have options beyond last season. The Dodgers are hoping to re-sign Chuck Grim, John Valentin and Ken Howell, but it remains to be seen what direction the Dodgers will take next. It’s still uncertain whether they want to continue with Mattingly, but bringing most of his staff back is a step in the right direction for both parties.
