Dodgers News: Andre Ethier Ruled Out 10-14 Weeks With Broken Tibia

Yesterday, it was announced that the Los Angeles Dodgers sent outfielder Andre Ethier for a bone scan on his right shin after he fouled a ball off of his leg a few days ago. That foul ball has apparently done more damage than just having Ethier being carted from the dugout to the clubhouse.

It has just been learned that the foul ball fractured Ethier’s right tibia. That injury will not require surgery, but it will keep him out of action from anywhere between 10 to 14 weeks. That is a significant amount of time, and it puts his return sometime in early July, if all things go according to plan.

ICYMI: Dodgers News: Maeda’s Pitchability Reigns Supreme

From the Los Angeles Dodgers official Twitter account:

This is a massive blow to the team, and it likely means that either Carl Crawford or Scott Van Slyke will be your starting left fielder when the season gets underway for the team on April 4th. There are no words at this time to poetically explain just how terrible of a spring, injury wise, this has been for the team.

This latest injury to Ethier takes out a valuable bat who could have effectively been a leadoff hitter for the Dodgers if called upon. It also might be easy to deduce that Trayce Thompson could make the roster now since there should be a need for even more punch out of the outfielders if required.

It’s just a really unfortunate series of events that have led to this moment, and it completely floors everyone. Ethier is a consummate professional, and the loss of him in the lineup against right-handers cannot even begin to be described. The Dodgers are going to have a tough time replacing the reliable veteran outfielder.

Hopefully Ethier can recover appropriately from this injury and help the team in the second half of the season, but for now he is no longer apart of the plan for the first half of the year. It’s just a shame. This game is not fair sometimes. Get well soon, Andre. The team will need you.

  1. Well, I think we are starting to look a whole heck of a lot like the Texas Rangers a couple years ago.  Expected to compete after making the playoffs and World Series a couple times, but injuries absolutely decimated the roster and kept them from being competitive.  Such a freak injury and so awful it resulted in a fracture for Andre.  I was really looking forward to him getting more playing time.  Well, looks like Trayce Thompson will have to step it up and Kike Hernandez will get even more playing time in the OF.  We will honestly be fine with the depth we have, but it still just sucks.

  2. Proof you can never be too deep in talent, sorry he is hurting but really ggod play by hi team mates is still possible  it is a tam, and they will have a chance to show some talent

  3. The loss of Ethier cannot begin to be described? Wow … that says more about your descriptive skills. Some professional perspective, please.
