Dodgers News: Baseball America Ranks Best Tools In Baseball

The Dodgers have suddenly become the favorites to not only win the National League, but also the World Series. A 15-game road winning streak, 32-8 40-game stretch and a five game NL West lead all point in the right direction.

Baseball America, a site known for their great minor league scouting reports, created a list of the best tools in baseball. The list includes players at various positions with the best arm, bat and most exciting player in both leagues.

Several Dodgers made the National League list and here’s where they rank:

  • Best Pitcher, 1st: Clayton Kershaw
  • Best Curveball, 2nd: Clayton Kershaw
  • Best Changeup, 2nd: Hyun-Jin Ryu
  • Best Pickoff move, tie 2nd: Clayton Kershaw
  • Best defensive 2B, 3rd: Mark Ellis
  • Best outfield arm, 3rd: Yasiel Puig

The rankings seem fair, but it’s curious to see that Puig didn’t make it on the top-3 list of most exciting players. While people will find faults in his game, there’s no denying that whenever he’s at the plate, people stop to watch.

Kershaw might only have 11 wins, but his incredibly small ERA of 1.91 leads all of baseball and some are calling for him to win both the NL Cy Young and MVP award.

Ryu has been a pleasant surprise this season as most Dodger fans didn’t know what they were getting when management signed him to such a lucrative contract, but he’s exceeded expectations.

While Ellis doesn’t have the greatest of bats, his inclusion on the defensive list among 2B is nice to see. In a non-flashy way, Ellis continues to get the job done for the Dodgers in the field.

So, what do you think? Should other Dodgers been includes or shifted around in the rankings?

  1. They are way off on best defensive catchers. AJ Ellis in almost all categories is a better defensive catcher than Buster Posey! Should go: 1) Martin 2) Molina 3) Ellis. People are just disillusioned by Posey and his MVP.

Ellis has a 49% Caught Stealing percentage! That is rediculous! And only Martin has a better Catcher’s ERA! Ellis is way underrated.

  2. Also, Andre Ethier, should be heavily considered for best defensive outfielder. He plays every day (almost) and has 1 error in 3 different outfield positions. Pretty damn good and underrated if you ask me.
