Dodgers News: Beckett Attempting To Hold Off On Surgery

[new_royalslider id=”22″] Josh Beckett returned from surgery to treat TOS better than most anticipated. The veteran right-hander was on the disabled list when the season began due to various minor injuries, but he eventually settled in and gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a viable option at the backend of the starting rotation.

Beckett then suffered another injury — torn labrum and cysts in his hip — which significantly impacted his performance and the 34 year old was forced to the DL. Beckett returned, didn’t make it out of the fourth inning in any of his three starts and was placed on the DL once again.

Beckett’s injury requires surgery that would end his season, however manager Don Mattingly indicated Beckett is attempting to stave off surgery, reports Ken Gurnick of MLB.com:

I have not heard that he’s shut down the whole year,” said manager Don Mattingly. “He’s doing everything he can to have the opportunity to pitch again. If he has surgery, his season’s over. It’s not like he’s got 10 more years and he can have surgery to get ready for Spring Training. It’s a matter of if he’s ready to progress forward or not.”

On top of the torn labrum and cysts, Beckett added an injury to the list while trying to pitch at less than 100 percent:

If that isn’t bad enough, Beckett also tore an adductor muscle while trying to pitch through the injury. By itself, that’s a month-long recovery.

The Dodgers have five weeks remaining in their regular season schedule, which leaves a slim margin for error in Beckett’s quest to return.

Although the Dodgers are without Hyun-Jin Ryu, who is dealing with his own injury concern, the additions of Kevin Correia and Roberto Hernandez offset potentially not getting Beckett back on the mound.

Beckett is 6-6 with a 2.88 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. In his 14th season and final year of his contract, Beckett threw his first career no-hitter as part of a personal three-game winning streak.
