Dodgers News: Billingsley Will Receive PRP Injection In Right Elbow

[new_royalslider id=”20″] Clayton Kershaw isn’t the only Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher who is currently attempting to work his way back from injury. The ace of the pitching staff is joined by Chad Billingsley, whose recovery from Tommy John surgery in 2013 has been met with multiple hurdles.

According to Eric Stephen of TrueBlueLA.com, Billingsley’s recovery is back on an upswing and he will receive an injection of platelet-rich plasma in his elbow on Wednesday:

Chad Billingsley will receive an injection of platelet-rich plasma into his right elbow on Wednesday and hopes to resume throwing next week when the Dodgers are on the road.

This isn’t the first time Billingsley will receive a PRP injection; he went through the same process in an effort to avoid Tommy John surgery last season. Billingsley has been inactive since throwing a bullpen session on April 15 prior to the Dodgers’ game with the San Francisco Giants.

The right-hander had to end it early after feeling some discomfort in his elbow, which led to an MRI the following day. The results of the MRI revealed tendinitis in Billingsley’s elbow, making it the second time he avoided a serious setback.

According to Stephen, Billingsley wasn’t overly concerned with the latest scare:

I wasn’t really too worried about it. I didn’t feel the same things I felt the previous times when I tore my UCL. Something was wrong though. I couldn’t throw hard.”

Prior to leaving a rehab start early because of feeling a sensation in his elbow, the tentative plan for Billingsley was he would make five rehab starts and then would potentially join the team. Being that he’s yet to complete one start, when Billingsley will be ready to make his debut is uncertain. The Dodgers appear to have a solid starter in Josh Beckett, who will likely be pushed from fourth to fifth in the rotation once Kershaw returns. Should Beckett maintain an effective level of performances, it may result in Billingsley coming out of the bullpen this season if or when he is healthy.
