Dodgers News: Brett Anderson Deal To Become Official
UPDATE: 12/27 – With no official word on the Brett Anderson announced, it appears the Dodgers will complete the deal in the coming week via Bill Shaikin of the LA Times.
The Dodgers also are expected to announce the signing of left-hander Brett Anderson early next week, perhaps as soon as Monday. The team reached agreement on a one-year, $10-million contract with Anderson earlier this month, pending a physical examination and consultation among medical specialists.
There’s a lot of change heading to Los Angeles in the coming week, as the Matt Kemp and Jimmy Rollins deals are set to be finalized along with the signing of Brandon McCarthy.
The Dodgers were busy during the Winter Meetings, trading and signing players to shape their 2015 roster. Andrew Friedman had mentioned the need for a catcher, which will come in the form of Yasmani Grandal, and two starting pitchers. McCarthy has reportedly agreed to a four-yeal deal and now it appears the Dodgers have made another deal.
According to Buster Olney of ESPN, there’s a new starting pitcher heading to Chavez Ravine:

The left-hander spent last season with the Colorado Rockies, making just eight starts due to injury. He went 1-3 with a 2.91 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 43 innings. Before the Rockies, Anderson spent five years with the Oakland Athletics. Because of his time with the A’s, it would seem that Farhan Zaidi was a fan and is at least a factor into the deal. Anderson has made over 20 starts in a season just once, his rookie year, and has dealt with numerous injuries over the years. Overall, he is 27-32 with a 3.73 ERA in 92 games (81 starts).
Anderson would temporarily slot into the fifth spot in the Dodgers rotation behind Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Hyun-Jin Ryu and McCarthy. Due to his past, the Dodgers could still sign another starting pitcher in case injury strikes again. If Anderson can remain on the mound, he could turn out to be a bargain buy for the team.
Lets hope he stays off the DL.

Must admit this is a real head-scratcher at that price tag. Yes, he has extreme groundball tendencies but his control has not been great. That’s even before looking at the extensive injury history. Sure, there’s upside here and Dodgers are looking at him as # 5 starter. So it’s not a particular big deal baseball-wise if he craps out again. But this is the kind of flyer you’d like to take at $ 4-5 mil per, not $ 10 mil guaranteed.
Other clubs had a shot at him at 4 or 5. 10 million got him no questions asked. They us the money when they can when competing for a piece they want. It’s a bargain if it works out at 10 million to the Dodgers if it doesn’t means less than nothing lol
No doubt the Dodgers have the dough to slam the door on other clubs when they want a guy. But I think a $ 5 mil deal with incentives plus maybe an option year in ’16 to go to $ 10-11 mil might have also worked. That way if he doesn’t work out, that’s 5 mil that could be spent elsewhere. If he does do well, then Dodgers not only have a good bargain for this year but have him at a reasonable price for 2016. But, we shall see.
