Dodgers News: Brian Wilson Exercises Option For 2015

[new_royalslider id=”16″] UPDATE (Nov. 3, 1:35 p.m. PT): The Los Angeles Dodgers formally announced Monday Brian Wilson exercised his player option for 2015:

[divide] With the season over following the Los Angeles Dodgers loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, the roster for the 2015 will begin to shape up.

The first move came just hours after Game 4 when starting pitcher Josh Beckett announced his plans to retire from baseball. Beckett was unable to pitch down the stretch and in the postseason because of injuries. Most of the core players are already signed to contracts for next season and another one confirmed his return.

According to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish, right-hander Brian Wilson will be back in Los Angeles in 2015:

It comes as no surprise that Wilson exercises his option. The Dodgers will pay the reliever at least $9.5 million this season because of his appearances in 2014. After dominating in the final months of 2013, including the postseason, the Dodgers brought back Wilson to be their setup man in front of Kenley Jansen. The 32-year-old struggled to find the same success from last season. He appeared in 61 games for the Dodgers and accumulated a 4.66 ERA. He allowed 25 earned runs in 48.1 innings and had a WHIP of 1.614 while striking out 54 batters.

One of Wilson’s biggest issues came from his velocity. Last season the right-hander was pitching mid-90s, but this year he struggled to touch 90 MPH consistently. Late in the year, Wilson said that he was saving his velocity for the postseason and that he would be able to dial it up once October hit. In the NLDS, Wilson got one out and gave up one hit. He failed to throw over 90 MPH in that appearance.

Wilson will return to the Dodgers next year and they hope that they will receive the 2013 version of their bearded right-hander.

  1. Not a fan of Wilson, never was…… I don’t think he’ll ever be back to what he was and we are stuck with his contract. :-/

    1. I’d rather pay $2 more per ticket for them to just eat his contract and tell him to get lost
