Dodgers News: Carl Crawford Leaves Game With “Minor” Shoulder Injury

Los Angeles Dodgers’ outfielder Carl Crawford remained in the United States while the rest of the team was getting acclimated in Australia because of the potential birth of his child with fiancé Evelyn Lozada. Crawford was expected to be the team’s starting left fielder and will assume that role once the Dodgers are back in the United States, except that it appears he could be out depending on the news given after the Dodgers’ minor league game today against the Seattle Mariners.

According to Pedro Moura of the OC Register, the speedy outfielder left the game early with an injury:

Several people who saw him carted away said he was holding his right shoulder as he was taken from the field. He had started a Triple-A game against the Seattle Mariners in left field and struck out looking in his first at-bat in the bottom of the first inning. After playing in the field in the top half of the second, he came out of the game and was soon carted off.

Don Mattingly is set to update his status when the Dodgers workout in Australia and it sounds like he might’ve dodged a bullet. Crawford missed some time this spring with tightness in his hamstring, but was set to travel with the Dodgers until the impending birth left him home. Last season, Crawford dealt with leg injuries that forced him to miss some time although he didn’t have any shoulder trouble.

The Dodgers are already down an outfielder with Matt Kemp continuing his recovery from ankle surgery. That leaves Andre Ethier in center field, Yasiel Puig in right field and either Scott Van Slyke, Mike Baxter or Joc Pederson in the final outfield spot for the two-game series in Sydney. Until more is known about the injury it sounds like he was pulled for precautionary reasons as the old, “the Dodgers have too many outfielders” thinking has been thrown out the window.

UPDATE:David Vassegh from AM 570 Radio had an update from Don Mattingly:
