Dodgers News: Chris Perez Placed On DL With Bone Spurs

[new_royalslider id=”12″] The Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen was expected to be one of the strengths on the team given their success and contributions in 2013.

However, that hasn’t necessarily panned out as Chris Perez, Brian Wilson and others have struggled at various points this season. The Dodgers also lost an option over the weekend when Paul Maholm tore his ACL and is expected to be out for the remainder of the season.

On Monday, the Dodgers placed Perez on the 15-day disabled list with bone spurs in his right ankle. Carlos Frias’ contract was selected from Triple-A Albuquerque and Maholm was transferred to the 60-day DL in order to make room on the roster.

Perez threw 1.1 innings, issued two walks and allowed one run on two hits in the Dodgers’ loss. The outing was Perez’s 42nd game pitched and he’s 0-3 with a bloated 5.03 ERA. The right-hander had trouble in his final seasons with the Cleveland Indians and has yet to find his footing with the Dodgers.

Frias is 8-4 with a 5.01 ERA in his first season with the Isotopes; the 24 year old also has one relief appearance at the Triple-A level. Prior to being promoted to Triple-A this season, Frias went 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts for Double-A Chattanooga.

Since joining the Dodgers organization in 2007, Frias has appeared in 33 relief games. Given Josh Beckett’s and Dan Haren’s recent struggles, Frias could fill a role similar to Maholm — capable of pitching out of the bullpen or as a spot starter.

This marks Frias’ first time at the Major League level.
