Dodgers News: Clayton Kershaw Scratched From Start Against Angels

Plenty of news involving the Los Angeles Dodgers in recent days has been centered on their 13-player trade with the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins, and their continued pursuit for more pitching as the non-waiver trade deadline came and went.

Aside from that, the Dodgers are also dealing with a troublesome hip that’s affecting Clayton Kershaw. He was scratched from his midweek start against the Oakland Athletics and penciled in to take the mound Friday in the series opener against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

However, the club announced Friday Kershaw was again scratched and is now slated to start Saturday afternoon. Zack Greinke, originally lined up to pitch Saturday, replaces Kershaw on Friday night. Greinke over his career is 1-5 lifetime with a 4.07 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over 10 games (nine starts) against the Angels, including a loss last season in which he gave up five runs (three earned) in seven innings.

Kershaw was seen at Dodger Stadium going completing dry work in the bullpen, followed by throwing from flat ground. Both activities were out of the norm on a start day for as regimen as Kershaw. He and his wife Ellen hosted their third annual Kershaw’s Challenge PingPong4Purpose event at Thursday night at Dodger Stadium, though Kershaw did not participate in ping pong portion of the festivities.

Over four July starts, the three-time Cy Young Award winner is 3-0 with a 0.27 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched. Opponents are batting just .162/.183/.188 during that span and Kershaw currently owns a 29-inning scoreless streak. He’s 8-6 overall this season with a 2.51 ERA, 2.12 FIP and 0.94 WHIP. Additionally, Kershaw leads the Majors with 185 strikeouts and 11.9 strikeouts per nine innings.
