Dodgers News: Cody Bellinger to Return to 1st Base Role on Wednesday

Los Angeles Dodgers’ first baseman and rookie phenom Cody Bellinger will be returning from the disabled list on Wednesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

He is on the disabled list due to an injury he suffered playing right field at Comerica Park against the Detroit Tigers last week. Bellinger backed up towards the wall on a fly ball to right field, where he rolled this ankle.

Taking over the everyday role as the first baseman since Bellinger has been out, is Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez was prepared to become a bench and/or platoon player upon his return from the disabled list. Bellinger had overtaken him on the depth chart as the first baseman during Gonzalez’s absence.

Gonzalez has been unable to come close to filling the shoes of Bellinger, posting a mediocre slash line since his own return from the disabled list:

41 Plate Appearances

.184 AVG

1 HR

2 BB

8 K

Gonzalez also left Sunday’s game early due to a back injury, but according to David Vassegh of AM 570, Gonzalez is healthy enough to be in the lineup Tuesday, the game before Bellinger returns.

Bellinger will still be seeing occasional time in the outfield, which is something that he is very familiar with. He is still the Dodgers’ primary first baseman though. When he returns on Wednesday, the Dodgers will be facing left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray and Bellinger will be returning to his home at first base.

The Dodger lineup has taken an obvious drop-off without Cody Bellinger in the four spot of the lineup. His return should bring them back to the best in all of baseball.
