Dodgers News: Corey Brown Signed To Minor League Deal

Today, the Los Angeles Dodgers signed former first round pick Corey Brown. The outfielder last played in the big leagues in 2014 as a member of the Boston Red Sox, but it was only for one at-bat.

The 30-year old Brown was originally selected by the Oakland Athletics in the first round of the 2007 Draft, but was eventually traded to the Washington Nationals in 2010.

While he has played in 39 career big league games, Brown only has 191 plate appearances. He’s hitting .171 in his career, but does have two career home runs.

Brown spent 2015 in the Tampa Bay Rays’ farm system where he hit .243, slugged 19 home runs, and drove in 60 runs while also stealing 15 bases and collecting 19 doubles.

It would be nice to see him develop into something for the team, but chances are that he’s nothing more than a minor league player with little hope of actually making the big league roster. And that’s fine. There’s value there.

The former Oklahoma State product has hit 159 career minor league home runs, has a career .260 batting average at the lower levels, and has stolen 103 bases. There is a tools package there that the Athletics obviously liked well enough to pick him in the first round, but he’s yet to ever make it mean something.

If the Dodgers can get him to even be a serviceable contributor, then you should thank your lucky stars. For now, he’s just another one of the guys. If all goes well for him, maybe he gets a cup of coffee when rosters expand in September. Just don’t expect much.

  1. Another worthless waste of money, even if it is minor league money on an outfielder with a team that is loaded with outfielders…Fried brains, you are a moron

  2. And here is another waste of money. They signed Joe Blanton. Another Friedman trash signing. What a joke he is. He should go back to Tampa and run a second hand store.
