Dodgers News: Corey Seager Ranked as Baseball’s Top SS Prospect

It looks like Julio Urias, Jose De Leon, Micah Johnson, and Cody Bellinger have some company.

Urias, if you recall, was rated as the top left-handed pitcher in the minors. Meanwhile, De Leon was rated as the fifth best right-handed pitcher, Johnson was named the seventh best second baseman, and Bellinger was dubbed the sixth best first baseman.

Now, you can add shortstop Corey Seager to the list of Los Angeles Dodgers prospects that have graced the MLB Pipeline top ten lists this offseason.

ICYMI: Yasiel Puig Is A Large Man In A Tiny Car

From MLB.com columnist Jim Callis:

1. Corey Seager, Dodgers
His brother Kyle is an All-Star, and Corey should be even better. He led the Minors in hitting (.349) and doubles (50) in 2014, then batted .337/.425/.561 during a September callup last year — at age 21. Seager may eventually move to third base, but his combination of a sweet left-handed stroke, bat speed, strength, uncanny feel for hitting and mature approach give him a higher offensive ceiling than any Major League shortstop except for Carlos Correa.

Think about that last sentence for a minute. “Higher offensive ceiling than any Major League shortstop except for Carlos Correa.” That’s not just high praise. That’s absolutely stratospheric praise.

We all remember how fantastic Correa was last season, so to see Seager’s name put into that category, even if just a tad below, is pretty special. Seager, as mentioned, had a .986 OPS last season for the Dodgers when he got called up in September. Now, he’ll be the Opening Day shortstop.

This is part of the youth movement that the Dodgers front office is trying to make happen. It started last year with Joc Pederson getting the everyday center field job after the team traded away Matt Kemp, and now it’s moved on to Seager.

If Seager can even put up a solid offensive season, then you’re looking at someone who can progress in the future to being a full-fledged superstar. The sky might be the limit for him.
