Dodgers News: Corey Seager to Face Baltimore Orioles Mark Trumbo in 1st Rd of HR Derby | VIDEO

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager is officially competing in the 2016 T-Mobile home run derby. Seager is the leader for the Dodgers with 17 and second among big league rookies. This will be Seager’s first appearance in the All-Star game as well as in the home run derby.

Seager will become the eighth player in Dodgers history to take part in the Derby. He joins Dodger greats Steve Garvey (1985), Mike Piazza (1993-94), Raul Mondesi (1995), Hee-Seop Choi (2005), Matt Kemp (2011-12) and Joc Pederson (2015).

This season Seager has hit 17 homers and has put on a performance that has landed him un talks for Rookie of the Year. His longest home run of the year, and most impressive according to MLBCut4, was vs. Zack Greinke and the Diamondbacks back on June 13.

Seager hit a 440-foot homer that sky rocketed over the pool at Chase Field in right-center.

The 22-year-old joins Major League Baseball’s leading home run hitter Mark Trumbo of the Baltimore Orioles; Cincinnati Reds outfielder Adam Duvall; Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez; and Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton in the derby.

Trumbo will face off against Seager in the first round of the tournament.

In a MLB poll, 52 percent voted Mark Trumbo to defeat Seager in the first round. Seager wasn’t far behind gaining 48 percent of the vote. We ran our own poll on Twitter @DodgersNation.

Manager Dave Roberts spoke about Seager’s decision to join the home run derby prior to the series opener v. the San Diego Padres.

Last year Joc Pederson made it all the way to the final round of the derby. Despite a strong performance, Cincinnati Reds’ Todd Frazier became the hometown champion. Frazier captured the title besting the then Dodgers rookie, 15-14, in the final round.

For what it’s worth Seager has Pederson’s support despite some fans not wanting Seager to participate.

For every home run hit in the derby T-Mobile will make a donation.  T-Mobile will donate $1,000 for every home run hit with a regular ball and $2,000 for every home run hit with a magenta ball, which will be used during the bonus round.

The entire charity pool will be donated to the winner’s local chapter of the Boys & Girls Club, and a local youth baseball initiative selected by the winner.  The other Derby participants will also receive $10,000 for a youth baseball initiative of their choosing.

The All-Star break begins on Monday July 11th with the derby kicking off the festivities. The 2016 T-Mobile Home Run Derby will be held at Petco Park in San Diego, and broadcast live by ESPN and MLB.com beginning at 8:00 p.m. (ET)/5:00 p.m. (PT).
