Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Honored By LA County Board of Supervisors

Today, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors honored new Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. The reason? Because Roberts’ hiring to the managerial position was a historic one.

Roberts is the first minority manager in the history of the Dodgers franchise, and it’s one that helps spring the organization into a new chapter.

From the Beverly Hills Courier:

“I’ve been in baseball so many years, my entire life,” the former Dodgers outfielder said. “It’s something that brings the community together.”

To be specific, Roberts played 10 seasons in Major League Baseball, and he finished with a lifetime .266 average. He also stole 243 bases.

Roberts’ hiring makes him only the third active minority manager in baseball, with Fredi Gonzalez of the Atlanta Braves and Dusty Baker of the Washington Nationals being the other two.

The former outfielder spent the last five years in the San Diego Padres organization as a coach, but won the Dodgers over in the interview portion of their hiring process after the team and former manager Don Mattingly agreed to part ways.

Oh, and there is something that Roberts is certain of early in his tenure:

“I believe that we have the best fans in the country,” he said.

As chronicled on here over the weekend, the result of a study done by the Boston Globe came to the conclusion that the Dodgers did have the best fans in baseball. The manager knows this as the truth, as well. So that’s always great.

The Dodgers and Roberts open up play on April 4th as they face off against the Padres in San Diego. That game will be broadcast on ESPN.
