Dodgers News: Dodgers Claim Mike Baxter, Designate Alex Castellanos

As the Dodgers prepared to fly to St. Louis for Game 6 tomorrow night, they were busy claiming Mike Baxter from the Mets and designating outfielder Alex Castellanos for assignment.

Baxter isn’t eligible for the postseason, nor would he have made the roster even if he was, but it’s an interesting move to say the least. As the Dodgers were on their way, Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times was the first to report the news:

To start the season, Baxter was thought to be a starter in the Mets putrid outfield, but Marlon Byrd beat him out and he was relegated to a reserve role. In 74 games with the Mets this season, Baxter hit just .189 with four RBI as he only has four career home runs in 194 games played.

His shining moment in a Mets jersey was his incredible catch in the seventh inning during Johan Santana’s no-hitter against the Cardinals on June 1 and suffered a displaced right collarbone and fractured rib cage cartilage.

Meanwhile, Castellanos was a September call-up to the Dodgers as he provided extra insurance in the outfield while Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier were dealing with various injuries. Castellanos played in only eight games this season, registering three hits in 18 plate appearances and was used sparingly as a pinch runner.

Baxter shouldn’t be anything more than a body on the 40-man roster, ala Jonathan Sanchez, but it’s interesting the Dodgers would give up on Castellanos so easily.
