Dodgers News: Dodgers Pick Up Options On Three Different Coaches

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly is still waiting to find out if he’ll be given a multi-year extension, but it was reported this afternoon that pitching coach Rick Honeycutt, third base coach Tim Wallach and first base coach Davey Lopes all had their options picked up.

News broke this morning that bench coach Trey Hillman was fired along with advanced scout Wade Taylor and seemingly set the stage for the Dodgers to finally make a decision about Mattingly.

Ken Gurnick of Dodgers.com was the first to report that the majority of Mattingly’s coaching staff is coming back in 2014:

Mattingly made it known in yesterday’s awkward press conference that he wanted his entire coaching staff back and it looks like he’s getting his way besides the Hillman firing.

Honeycutt has been with the Dodgers since the Grady Little era in 2006 while Wallach and Lopes have been apart of Mattingly’s staff for the past couple of seasons. Wallach has been a candidate to get a managerial position for the past couple seasons, but having no experience as a big league manager might be the reason why he hasn’t been promoted.

It’s being reported that Mattingly has flown home to Indiana as it feels like management’s decision about whether to extend him beyond next season is right around the corner. The Dodgers are also hopeful they can retain Chuck Grim, John Valentin and Ken Howell as all three didn’t have options beyond last season.

Only four days into the offseason and there’s plenty of drama surrounding the Dodgers coaching situation as it’s looking like everything will be resolved rather quickly.
