Dodgers News: Dominguez & Figgins Recalled, Patterson & Rodriguez Optioned

The Los Angeles Dodgers have fallen into the habit of tinkering with their roster in recent days. One day after calling up Red Patterson so he could start in the second game of the doubleheader, the Dodgers continued to make adjustments on Friday. With Hyun-Jin Ryu headed for the disabled list with shoulder inflammation, it vacated a spot on the roster.

In a series of moves, the Dodgers announced Jose Dominguez and Chone Figgins were recalled, while Paco Rodriguez and Red Patterson were both optioned back to Triple-A:

Rodriguez made the Opening Day roster, but was optioned to Triple-A when Brian Wilson was reinstated from the disabled list. The roller coaster ride continued for Rodriguez as he was then recalled on Tuesday in a move that lasted a couple of games with Friday’s news.

Figgins made the expanded travel roster for the Opening Series in Sydney, Australia, and was kept on when the Dodgers had to trim it to 25 upon returning to the U.S. The utility man saw little playing time however, pinch-hitting in nine at-bats, collecting just one hit. Arguably his most notable moment came on a walk he drew in the bottom of the 10th inning against the Detroit Tigers, that set the stage for Carl Crawford to double in the game-winning run.

The 36-year-old was with the Dodgers for 19 games before being optioned on April 21 to clear room Dominguez. Given the heavy workload the bullpen had endured up to that point, a fresh arm was in need and give how sparingly Figgins was used, he was the clear choice to be sent down. Now back with the Dodgers, the 2014 season has already been somewhat of a success for the utility player.

Dominguez has appeared in four games this season and adding him back to the roster essentially in favor of Rodriguez is a bit of a perplexing decision given the work from both Chris Perez and Chris Withrow. Furthermore, there’s still the presence of Brandon League and Brian Wilson. With Rodriguez being sent down, J.P. Howell again finds himself as the lone lefty in the bullpen.
