Dodgers News: Don Mattingly Believes Zack Greinke Has Been Overlooked

Since signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers prior to the start of the 2013 season, the Dodgers have had the luxury of two aces leading their starting rotation. When Clayton Kershaw hasn’t been great, Greinke was there to pick up the team and vice versa. When both pitchers have been on top of their game, the Dodgers more times than not racked up consecutive wins.

While it may be Kershaw who is coming off an MVP season and his third Cy Young Award, Greinke has very much looked the part. He threw 7.2 innings and collected seven strikeouts Tuesday en route to earning his first win over the Milwaukee Brewers since being traded by the club in July 2012.

After yet another dominant outing from the 31 year old, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he believes Greinke has been overshadowed by Kershaw, according to Zach Hefland of the LA Times:

He may get overlooked because he’s a little quieter,” Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly said. “And really what Clayton’s been doing over the last four or five years has just been off the charts, and so anybody that was here would kind of get a little bit overlooked. But I think within baseball circles they know how good Zack is.”

Greinke is in the midst of a career-high 10-game wining streak with a 1.30 ERA that dates back to last season and stretches over 14 starts. His five wins this season are tied for first in the Majors and so too are his 40.1 innings pitched.

Greinke certainly has additional motivation to perform well this season as he can opt out of his deal come the end of the year. While the right-hander said it isn’t something he’ll discuss, Greinke has thus far put himself in the driver’s seat to opt out and sign a more lucrative and longterm deal.

The Dodgers improved to 25-8 in games Greinke starts after a loss and he improved his personal mark to 21-6 when taking the mound after a Dodgers loss.

  1. Zack Grinke will be 32 next season and also a free agent. The Dodgers must dig deep and give whatever the asking price is for this great pitcher who is in every right a starting ace on any other club and has at least 3 more great years in front of him. Thats a lot of wins close to 60 or more the Dodgers can use to finally win it all in the fall classic. Not the time to be frugal Dodger F.O. Zack is a must or the club will have to live with letting one of major leagues best pitchers go while also making me and a few million other faithful ticket paying fans very mad at you

  2. I agree with Greg = Dodgers must make a great offer for at least three years to Greinke – possibly 4 with an option for a 5th to finish his career in LA.

  3. They gotta resign him. Kershaw is younger but Greineke is a great pitcher. He knows how to win and makes the whole team better by a long shot. There isint a better 1-2 pun h in baseball, period.
