Dodgers News: Mattingly To Monitor Possible Issue With Chapman, Reds

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds met for the first and only time of the spring on Friday at Camelback Ranch. The two clubs won’t see each other again until Aug. 13 at Dodger Stadium, but an incident from Friday likely won’t be forgotten.

Aroldis Chapman took over for the Reds in the fifth inning but it was during the sixth inning when he and Justin Turner appeared to have something brewing. Turner stepped in the batter’s box with two outs and Chapman unleashed the first pitch behind his knees:

Understandably, Turner didn’t seem thrilled with the pitch and he glared towards Chapman before stepping back in the box; the at-bat ended in a Turner strikeout. When asked about what transpired, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he wasn’t sure what the reason was but would monitor the situation, according to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com:

Not sure. Not sure,” manager Don Mattingly said when asked what the incident was all about. “We’ll keep an eye on it.”

Turner also wasn’t sure what the reasoning may have been, though he did offer an at-best half-serious conjecture:

Turner first said he had no comment, then facetiously said, “I don’t know. I guess it slipped.”

While the Dodgers have had their share of dustups with the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals, there isn’t much to speak of with respect to the Reds. Turner only has six career at-bats against Chapman with one coming last season.

At-bats between Chapman and fellow Cuban Yasiel Puig have provided extra juice with more intensity, but even those have appeared to be nothing more than two countrymen wanting to get the better of the other.
