Dodgers News: Edinson Volquez Believes He Was Tipping Pitches

The Dodgers shocked many when they decided to sign former Padres starter Edinson Volquez to a deal last week, but with such a large lead in the NL West, a six-man rotation has been put into use.

Volquez will start tonight’s game against the Rockies and given his lack of success at Coors Field this year, it could get ugly. However, in his only appearance with the Dodgers, Volquez pitched a clean inning as he’ll hopefully build off that.

Talking to Bill Plunkett of the OC Register, Volquez said he and pitching coach Rick Honeycutt found something in his bullpen session on Sunday:

The pitching coach saw some things and is helping me be a little more consistent with my delivery, said Volquez, who signed with the Dodgers last week after being released by the San Diego Padres. I was tipping my pitches and we worked on it.

In three starts at Coors Field this year, Volquez is 0-2 with a 14.92 ERA as the Dodgers will look to complete yet another sweep. With such a wide lead in the division, it looks like Ned Colletti took a flier on the former NL Rookie of the Year award winner.

Don Mattingly has already started resting players as he pushed Hyun-Jin Ryu back two days and sat Hanley Ramirez in last night’s game. More rest can be on the way as Andre Ethier, Carl Crawford and possibly Adrian Gonzalez will get tonight off against Rockies lefty Jorge De La Rosa.

It’ll be interesting to see how Volquez pitches tonight as he could join Carlos Marmol and Brandon League of last year as players Honeycutt has helped fix in the last year.
