Dodgers News: Hand Soreness May Send Hanley Ramirez To DL

[new_royalslider id=”7″] Like several other Los Angeles Dodgers, Hanley Ramirez’s 2014 season has been beset by injury. The 30-year-old shortstop has battled through calf soreness, a troublesome right shoulder and most recently, a sore left hand.

Ramirez was hit by a 99 MPH fastball in the ninth inning of Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals and was immediately removed from the game. It was the second instance Ramirez had been hit by a pitch in the game.

The shortstop didn’t appear in any of the three games against the Pittsburgh Pirates and according to manager Don Mattingly, a stint on the disabled list may be in order, via J.P. Hoornstra of the LA Daily News Group:

Only if they tell me (Friday) it’s going to be longer than another day or something,” Mattingly said. “If it gets to be a week, you have to start thinking about it. At this point, we’re not thinking about it.”

Ramirez was nearly placed on the DL in early July, but managed to get through a pre-game workout in Colorado and played in six of the next seven games.

The shortstop has been open with his desire to avoid the DL and went so far as to say he’d keep playing until his right shoulder fell off.

Should the Dodgers place Ramirez on the DL, it would be retroactive to Monday, which would allow him to return August 5. On Tuesday, Mattingly was optimistic the Dodgers would get Yasiel Puig back for the weekend series.

While attempting to play through his injuries, Ramirez has failed to meet the expectations he set with last season’s production. He’s hitting .273 with 11 home runs and 49 RBIs. Ramirez recently got defensive when his stats were compared to 2013’s and argued his critics wouldn’t be satisfied unless he was putting up unsustainable numbers.

Ramirez’s inability to remain healthy has likely cost him with this being a contract season. However, he’ll have an opportunity to restore some of his value if he’s able finish the season in impressive fashion.

  1. I think he may be worried about Guerrero coming in and getting a chance to play and showing the organization that Hanley is expendable, his contact is looking less likely every day
