Dodgers News: Howie Kendrick Return in The Works

The news all offseason has been that the Los Angeles Dodgers were patiently waiting for Howie Kendrick to sign elsewhere. However, now, it appears as if the Dodgers are starting to warm up to the possibility of re-signing Kendrick.

As news broke this morning from Ken Rosenthal, it was revealed that the Dodgers were considering bringing Kendrick back in large part because of the injury to Justin Turner and the lack of depth in the infield.

Currently, the second base platoon is between Chase Utley and Kike Hernandez. Adding Kendrick to the mix gives the team a better bat while allowing Hernandez to possibly stand in for Turner at third base if needed.

From Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) a little while ago:

So, there you have it. The team is “making progress” in talks with Howie Kendrick. That is probably for the best since Kendrick hasn’t had any real suitors this offseason, at least not based on the initial reports.

Kendrick hit .295 with 9 home runs, 54 runs batted in, and 64 runs scored in 495 plate appearances last season for the Dodgers. The team desperately needs another bat, so adding Kendrick back into the fold is probably what the doctor ordered.

As for now, we’ll just have to wait and see if the Dodgers and Kendrick can come to some sort of an agreement. It likely won’t be a multi-year deal, seeing as how the Dodgers might like to recoup a pick next season much like they tried to do this season, and also since Kendrick will turn 33 years old in mid-July.
