Dodgers News: Hyun-Jin Ryu Remains on Track for Opening Day, Focused on Slimming Down

We’ve given Hyun-jin Ryu updates in the past, and another one came down the pipeline courtesy of ESPN’s Buster Olney earlier today.

Based on the updates, it does seem like Ryu might be on track to actually making it to Opening Day as a healthy starting rotation option. And, as is the case, that’s awesome.

ICYMI: Dodgers Passing on Chapman Considered A Big Mistake, per Bleacher Report

From Buster Olney on ESPN.com:

Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu, who is coming back from shoulder surgery: He’s throwing and hasn’t had any setbacks, and looks to be ready to be on a regular schedule in spring training. Additionally, Ryu has dropped a lot of weight, and has improved his conditioning over where he was last spring.

This is all big news. Not just the fact that Ryu is on schedule to be ready for spring training and the regular season, but that he also is said to have lost a lot of weight. That’s a huge step not only in coming back this season, but hopefully avoiding such injury moving forward in his career.

One of the surest ways to get healthy is to get in better shape, not just mentally but also physically. If Ryu really has taken his training to a whole different level whereby he dropped some substantial weight, then this really is great news for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ryu missed the entire 2015 season due to a torn labrum. The fact he’s out there in great shape while also on track to pitch at the beginning of the season is something of great promise.

We’ll see if this means anything in the long run for Ryu, but for now take this news as another stepping stone on the path to a full recovery for Ryu. This is fantastic news.
