Dodgers News: Hyun-Jin Ryu Suffers Apparent Leg Injury

[new_royalslider id=”14″] UPDATE: The Los Angeles Dodgers announced Hyun-Jin Ryu suffered a gluteus muscle strain on his right side and is considered day-to-day:

[divide] With the acquisition of Kevin Correia, the Los Angeles Dodgers were afforded the luxury of inserting the right-hander into their starting rotation, thus affording the remainder of their starters another day of rest.

Tuesday’s starter, Hyun-Jin Ryu, has historically pitched well when throwing on extra rest. The Dodger lefty collected three strikeouts in the first two innings of the game, but also allowed the Atlanta Braves to push a run across with two outs in the second inning.

Ryu allowed another run to score with two outs, this time in the fourth inning and the Braves tied the game. He was snakebitten once more with two outs in the fifth as the Braves took a 3-2 lead behind Justin Upton’s RBI single.

With the Dodgers still trailing the following inning, Miguel Rojas was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners with two outs. Rather than pinch-hit for Ryu, manager Don Mattingly allowed his pitcher to bat and he struck out.

Ryu took the mound in the bottom of the sixth and promptly retired the first two batters he faced. He then walked B.J. Upton and appeared to suffer a leg injury on his delivery of what was ball four.

Trainer Stan Conte and Mattingly immediately made their way to the mound and Ryu was seen on the SportsNet LA telecast pointing to his upper-hamstring area. Ryu was taken out of the game and replaced by Jamey Wright, who struck out the lone batter he faced.

Should Ryu’s injury be more of a long-term issue, it would further deplete a pitching staff that’s taken multiple hits in recent weeks. Paul Maholm was lost for the season with an ACL tear and Josh Beckett may not take the mound again after being placed on the disabled list.

Mattingly has previously indicated Correia would work out of the bullpen, but he may be forced back into the starting rotation.
