Dodgers News: Hyun-jin Ryu Takes Big Step Towards Recovery

After missing the entire 2015 season due to surgery on his left shoulder labrum, left-hander Hyun-jin Ryu completed a vital first step towards returning.

According to Daum Sports, Ryu threw off of a mound for the first time since the surgery. The session took place at Camelback Ranch in Arizona. This is big, big news for him, and also for the team.

There’s no telling of when Ryu will be ready to actually pitch in a competitive game, but there isn’t any need to rush him back due to the depth in their rotation. It always helps when you can look at your rotation going into the season and see that you don’t need to speed up a player’s recovery process.

Ryu will continue his training over the next little while in an effort to get back out there as soon as possible. In 2014, the left-hander made 26 starts en route to compiling a 14-7 record with a 3.38 ERA, as well as striking out 139 batters in 152 innings.

Labrum injuries are seen as a big deal, as most any injury should be viewed, but the fact Ryu has progressed this far since May bodes well for a full recovery.

Michael Pineda of the New York Yankees had surgery to repair a torn labrum in 2012, and he came back from that to pitch well in 2014. He then followed that up with a 2015 season that saw him finish with a 12-10 record, 4.37 ERA, and 156 strikeouts in 160.2 innings.

For now, it’s all good news for Hyun-jin Ryu as he embarks on the recovery path. Keep your fingers crossed.
